What is a Safety PTO Clutch?

Safety PTO Clutches perform the same function as a standard dual-clutch with two independently actuated clutches in one assembly. In a Safety PTO Clutch, the PTO lever action works the opposite way. It depresses the levers, forcing the pressure plate against the flywheel, trapping the PTO disc, and creating drive at the PTO output shaft. The PTO disc is normally always disengaged and can only be engaged by the operator moving a mechanical lever. In the event of PTO linkage failure during the tractor operation, the PTO will automatically fail safely and disengage. Also, during start up the PTO is disengaged.

Care must be taken when replacing this type of clutch so that the loose PTO disc is correctly located on the engine’s flywheel. The disc will remain loose after bolting the clutch to the flywheel. The PTO disc spline has a large leading edge to assist correct alignment during tractor reassembly. The PTO disc has locating dowels to centralize the disc within the pressure plate during assembly.
